NBDC final stakeholder meeting - "Sustainable land and water management in transition"

Organizers' agenda

14-15 November 2013

Sheraton Hotel and ILRI campus, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Objectives:
  • To display the most accomplished outputs of the Nile Basin Development Challenge to a variety of key actors of land and rain water management (LRWM)
  • To raise awareness of influential LRWM actors about the opportunities highlighted in the Nile Basin Development Challenge
  • To pave the way for further opportunities to interact among LRWM champions with e.g. Water Lands and Ecosystems, Humidtropics and Africa RISING.

Agenda
  • Thursday 14 November (18.00 - 21.00): High level dinner to project the messages related to the NBDC digital story and discuss upcoming issues
  • Friday 15 November (13.30 - 17.30): NBDC knowledge watershed event
    • 12.00: Registration and lunch (Yemisrach / Nigist)
    • 13.30: Welcome (Simon/Alan) and overview of the Knowledge watershed (Ewen)
    • 13.45: Open mic: Our own achievements (NBDC team and partners), possibly mapped onto the watershed visual and with indications about where we can hear more about this in the 'watershed ballad' (see next section) part of the event. (Ewen)
      • 5' Ask people to reflect individually on what their personal NBDC success is / what NBDC success they have witnessed
      • 20' Buzz in groups of 2 / 4 / table to reflect on this and identify possible clusters of achievements
      • 20' Pinning achievement cards on the wall, possibly introducing these on the microphone (invitation).
    • 14.30: Ballad through the knowledge watershed (Amanda):
      • (20') Introduction to the 8 NBDC messages in plenary
      • (45-60') Going round the scales of NBDC work: Local level (Beth), regional level (Tracy), national level (Kees).
      • Bus stop (3x15 or 20' - if lack of time we ask people to just do one rotation i.e. visit 2 stands
        • Split groups in 3 (25-30 people each) - they can split themselves in two at each bus stop if need be (there are 2 'hosts' at each scale stand)
        • Have NBDC teammates aligned at their scale 'stand' to discuss the messages at their scale and capturing key insights/questions/suggestions on flipchart)
        • 3 x 15'-20' + 5-10' plenary reflections from the presenters at the end (based on what they documented)?
    • 15.50: (Elias) Open walk around (coinciding with coffee break) for participants to deepen their understanding about specific aspects of the bus stop + unveiling upcoming scientific work (planned publications that are not yet finalised, and additional research questions/ideas) and possible pathways forward (WLE, Humidtropics, National Platform 'space' etc.). This would be the more typical 'Share Fair' part with free format display of various bits of work around:
        • The publications' tent - all messages and existing publications combined with...
        • ... Future opportunities' streams (e.g. WLE, Humidtropics, National Platform, SLM) - to be presented by spokespersons for each e.g. Simon/Valentine for WLE, Kindu/Beth/Alan/Annet for HT, Belay/Chair/Kees for NP).
    • 16.15: Highlands panel - back to the future, from Tis Abay to...? (Alan)
      • This panel discussion would involve high level reps from EIAR, Ministries, Research institutes, SLM about key opportunities around the NBDC science, existing knowledge and practice and possible new ideas and initiatives to build upon. To be MC'd by a high profile person (Belay? Alan? Simon?). The content of the panel discussion (involving other participants than panelists also eventually) would be a final reflection from these fairly high level participants - though not as high as the evening before - around the new ideas they have heard, how they see their organisation and other initiatives build upon NBDC work, in the Blue Nile basin and beyond. Once again here, of course there's no pressure to execute this (nor any accountability mechanism).
      • Alan to MC
      • Panelists: 1 woreda rep (Jeldu/Diga/Fogera), 1 Uni rep, 1 National gov't rep, 1 basin authority rep + Melaku Tadesse?
      • Questions to prepare upfront + opening to the audience for additional questions
    • 17.00: Closing and cocktails (Amanda)

Final workshop ideas (science, development, policy, capacity)

Objectives:

- Celebrating our end and achievements

- Presenting final results
Try to maximize buy-in by partners-stakeholders--could try things like joint presentations of key messages, possible future actions, next collaborative program etc with Ethiopians taking the lead--DOUG

- Discussing our legacy

  • o Planting our research in policy and practice
  • o Building upon our network
  • o Capitalising on our capacities
  • o Carrying on into other programs

Possible ideas for that final event:

- Standard closure event (broken down by message) – using flashy formats and developing a compelling way of conveying our messages…

- Video work – with Marianne Gadeberg (to tease out messages)

- Piggy back on event in Addis or Ethiopia in donor/policy arena

- Policy roundtable DOUG is working on a short proposal. These are not either-or options, several can be adopted.

- KMIS idea?

ACTION: Belay to check possible events by AU, UN, SLM, CRDA etc.

ACTION: Ewen to contact Michael about possible video or KMIS track to this final event.

Celebrating IWMI’s 10 years as part of a Share Fair (with Nadia) – reflecting about what’s been achieved in the past 10 years. DOUG -- I would be happy to help plan this as part of the institutional history of IWMI.
